4 Ways to Elevate Your Space

The role the environment plays in your meditation practice is important. Elements of your practice space can facilitate entering an open, loving, generous state of consciousness.

You can invest in your meditation space without investing a lot of - or even any - money.

Cleanliness. In general, people tend to feel more relaxed in a tidy space. Remove clutter and keep your meditation area neat and organized.

Beauty. Find pictures, art, figurines, or other decorative items that represent beauty to you and keep these in your area. They can be found natural objects from a neighborhood park or fresh flowers from your garden, for example.

Music. Play soft background music during your meditative practice that will facilitate this state. Perhaps the music is associated with a religious or spiritual tradition, such as chanting or flute music. YouTube and SoundCloud have lots of playlists available at no cost.

Altar. Create an altar for your meditation space. The altar need not be religious or spiritual. Instead, it serves as a focus point. You can keep the altar simple with candles or flowers. You might also place pictures of loved ones or other meaningful objects. Don’t worry about what you think an altar is “supposed to look like.” Find a configuration of items that represent you and your practice.
