NeuroFeedback
Neurofeedback, also known as EEG biofeedback, has been gaining more attention as a non-invasive, medication-free approach for treating brain-based conditions, including ADHD, anxiety disorders, anxiety, depression, and insomnia, among other mental health disorders.
Neurofeedback is the process of shifting brainwave patterns through EEG biofeedback. Essentially, we can use a brain computer interface to measure and display brainwave data on a computer screen. This data is connected to a visual and/or auditory feedback system allowing an easy way to visualize changes in brainwave activity. For example, specific EEG patterns may be connected to the brightness and volume of a movie; when the brainwaves behave in a desired way, the screen if fully lit and the volume is all the way up. When the brainwaves behave in undesired ways, the screen dims and the volume drops. With this kind of information, the brain is able to learn and change, potentially leading to increased flexibility and a reduction of symptoms.
We begin the neurofeedback process with a Quantitative EEG assessment (qEEG). This involves recording EEG activity in 19 locations on the surface of the head and analyzing it through several systems. This data allows us to create “brainmaps,” allowing us to see how the brain activity compares to a normative database. This often allows us to get an idea of where and how certain parts of the brain are behaving. When we observe patterns that are likely to be connected to specific concerns, such as rumination or difficulty paying attention, we create individualized programs to train those patterns toward greater flexibility.
Neurofeedback sessions typically occur twice weekly for 20-30 sessions, but varies depending on each person’s specific situation. Our neurofeedback services are private pay only and are $175/hour.
